The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, but then he admitted that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or imploding.
Matteo's Unexpected Comeback
At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team lacking backup options.
Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."
Discovering His True Position
It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
