The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
